Zanzibar and Kenyan Beaches

Zanzibar and Kenya have well renowned beaches, owing to their coastlines bordering Indian Ocean. This section will cover these havens of paradise along the coastlines of these two great tourism destinations.

Kenya

Diani beach is popular for its silky white sands, warm turquoise waters and palm-lined streets, making it the sliver of paradise marking the border where the African continent meets the vast Indian Ocean. It boasts a magnificent 25km stretch whose life blossoms into something the body feels as much as the soul.

Watamu beach is known for its wonderful and pristine white sand. It is considered as part of the Watamu National reserve.

The beach is considered one of the best snorkeling and diving areas on the coast of East Africa. It is also rated the third-best beach in Africa, for its crystal clear water and silver sand beaches.

Nyali beach is known for its many high-class hotels and residential houses, modern standards, and long white sand beaches making it a popular destination for both local and foreign tourists. It also has coral reefs, loved by divers.

Bamburi beach is a wonderful beach retreat for those who want to spend time in the sea and in the sun. Right off the coast there is a coral reef, which makes the spot a great place for anyone who wants to do some snorkeling or scuba diving.

Tiwi beach is situated on South Coast of Mombasa. The beach is relatively small and less crowded but boasts plenty of recreation options. You can get there by ferry from Mombasa, which makes for a fun means of transport. Of particular note are the small tidal pools that become visible in low tide. Find one and settle in, because the fish in the pools are trapped there until the tide changes. You can watch underwater creatures splash around, making it an interesting spot for kids and adults alike.

Kilifi beach is a small but boasts sugar, sand beaches and plenty of history. Lush greenery borders the sandy coastline on one side, and on the other you’ll find the clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Boat riding is common.

Shanzu beach is known for its clear and refreshing waters, and the white sand dotted with coconut palm trees. Shanzu Beach is home to a number of hotels and resorts, so you’ll have no trouble finding local accommodation or a place to dine on delicious seafood each day. The beach looks completely during the tides.

Malindi beach is one of the most popular beach destinations in Kenya offering an amazing climate, beautiful views and plenty of wonderful hotels right by the water. Activities here include sailing, windsurfing, deep-sea fishing or snorkeling in the coral reef south of the town center. The local restaurants and bars have a diverse crowd, and you’ll be able to find some fantastic cuisine as well as a few lively nightlife spots.

Zanzibar

Nungwi Beach on the northwest coast is one of the most beautiful and popular beaches in Zanzibar. Nungwi is definitely one of the liveliest areas on the island and the numerous beach resorts, hotels, restaurants and bars offer a variety of night-time entertainment. The Nungwi coast has fantastic coral reefs which are ideal for diving and snorkeling. Nungwi Beach also has some of the best sunsets in Zanzibar and a sunset cruise on a traditional dhow sailing boat is a must. It is arguably the best in Zanzibar.

Kendwa beach is sometimes referred to as the “little sister” of Nungwi Beach, and is much quieter than its sibling in the north. The sunsets at Kendwa beach are legendary, so pick your spot on the beach when the sun starts to lower. Once it dips below the horizon, the beach comes alive in new way with nightlife and relaxed beach parties. Its clear waters are perfect for swimming, snorkeling and diving.

Kizimkazi beach is known for its authenticity and dolphins. The coral rag cliff elevates the waterfront above the ocean and the beaches take the form of small coves rather than broad expanses of sand, making it different from the classic palm-backed lagoon of the east coast.

Michamvi beach is situated in Michamvi, a peninsula on the central east coast of the island. The peninsula has a vibrant coral lagoon and beautiful palm-fringed beaches set in a string of scenic coves between high coral-rag cliffs.

Bwejuu beach is a white sandy beach on the island’s southeast coast, lined with palm trees and only an hour and a half away from Stone Town. It’s one of the quietest parts of Zanzibar and a popular choice for those seeking total relaxation, peace and privacy. Activities here include but not limited to a mangrove forest and dhow boat trip, a visit to the local village of Bwejuu, a reef safari, snorkeling and diving, a visit to Stone Town, or a day trip to the Jozani Forest, which is home to the Red Colobus Monkey.

Matemwe beach has some of the finest sand on the island and amongst the palm trees at the back of the beach you’ll find traditional fishing villages, which offer a fascinating insight into the local culture. It has the best diving and snorkeling on the island, plus some excellent kite surfing and sailing. Just beyond the main reef, is the world-famous island of Mnemba Atoll; a popular scuba diving spot surrounded by pristine and very accessible coral reefs.

Paje beach has all the makings of a perfect beach: long stretches of white sand, palm trees swaying in the breeze, turquoise waters and exquisite sunsets. It is known for its water sports and the excellent kite surfing conditions draw amateur and professional kite surfers from all over the world to this specific area of the island. The clear warm waters are great for scuba diving, as the reefs offshore are home to turtles, starfish, trumpet fish, moray eels and other colourful marine creatures.

Pongwe beach is lucky in the fact that the whole beach is protected by an offshore reef, which keeps the inner waters calm and safe for all to swim in. Snorkelling and boat trips can also be arranged to the reef. It is arguably the best swimming beach in Zanzibar.
