Rwanda Adventure Safari with Gorilla Trekking

This 10 days epic Rwanda safari adventure will give you a great memory of Rwandan tour and you explore and wrap up Rwandan attractions in just 10 days. You will be able to visit all the 3 Rwandan parks thus Nyungwe National Park and Volcanoes national park and Akagera National Park adding in a visit to Lake Kivu to spice up your stay. You will as well be able to interact with the local community as you go by your day activities. You will well be able to do gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking which is a life time adventure.

Day 1

Arrive Kigali

Upon arrival at Kigali international airport and passing through the immigration process, you will be welcomed by our safari driver who will brief you shortly and transfer you to the booked accommodation.

Day 2

Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Today you will be picked at your lodge after completing your morning breakfast, and head for a Kigali city tour and visit the Kigali genocide memorial ground, and have lunch before being transferred to Musanze near Volcanoes National Park where you will your dinner and overnight stay.

0830: Pick up from your hotel in Kigali
0845: Drive and visit the Genocide Memorial Centre
1030: Transfer to Volcanoes. Travel time 2.5hrs.
1300: Arrival at your lodge in Volcanoes NP
1330: Lunch for the day and spend the rest of the afternoon on relaxation.
1500: The rest of the afternoon is for relaxation around the lodge.
1800: Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel around Volcanoes NP

Day 3

Gorilla Trekking Adventure and cultural experience

Early morning cup of coffee, then prepare for the gorilla trekking briefing from the park headquarters and thereafter, you will be briefed before you enter the jungle with your packed meal to search for the shy mountain gorillas and enjoy their lifestyle in their real home. After meeting the gorillas, you can sit around these great apes for a whole hour watching their social life as you take pictures. On a gorilla safari, a reasonable degree of fitness is required as well as walking shoes, packed food and mineral water, insect repellent, sun screen and hut. The gorilla tracking experience takes half or whole day depending on the movements of these primates. After this gorilla tracking experience you will return to your lodge for lunch. After lunch, visit the cultural village to experience the local ways of living for Rwandans.

Day 4

Golden Monkey Trek and transfer to Gisenyi

After having your early morning breakfast, you will be transferred to the park, for briefing and later head for the golden monkey trekking. The same procedure for gorilla trekking, applies to golden monkeys. You will still have an hour with the golden monkeys. You will later return, head for lunch, and transfer to Gisenyi where you will spend your afternoon at leisure.

Day 5

Boat ride and Transfer to Nyungwe

After your early morning breakfast, head for a boat ride in Lake Kivu including visiting numerous islands and, later you will be transferred to Nyungwe which is roughly 2 hours away, with great countryside experience looking at the local community and traditional building en route. We shall reach in the afternoon, have lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure.

1100: Start the Boat trip inside the Lake
1200: Estimated time of returning from the boat excursion
1230: Transfer to the Moriah Hill Hotel for lunch.

Day 6

Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk

Today, after your early morning cup of African coffee, you will leave your hotel to experience the natural forest of Nyungwe, well known for having 13 species of primates, and transferred to the park for briefing and chimpanzee trekking. You will be entitled to one hour on finding the chimpanzees. After doing the chimpanzee trek, head for lunch. In the afternoon, you will head for a canopy walk experience, where you will explore the Park Forest on a 70 m, suspended metallic bridge. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 7

Transfer to Kigali

Meet your guide, after your breakfast at the lodge and transfer back to Kigali, with an en route visit to King Palace museum, where you will have a great experience to learn about Rwandan culture. You will enjoy an en route lunch and reach Kigali in the afternoon, for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8

Transfer to Akagera National park with Boat trip

After an early morning breakfast at 8:00 am and leave for Akagera national park which is roughly 3 hours’ drive away. You will reach the park and check in at your lodge, later lunch and followed by an afternoon game drive or opt to relax at the lodge.

Day 9

Game drive in the Akagera National park

Full day game drive. After an early morning breakfast at 7:00 am and leave for a full day game drive, in Akagera national park to catch up with late hunters and early risers. We will be searching for the big mammals like Elephants, Giraffes, Buffaloes, several Antelope species, and recently the re-introduced Lions and Rhinos. The park is a varied habitat for wildlife and a number of bird species with over 500 bird species in the park making it a birding paradise. Diner and overnight at the lodge.

Departure

After having your breakfast, jump into your jeep, find your way to Kigali, and if time allows, enjoy a city tour for some shopping, depending on your flight time, you will be transferred to the airport to catch up with your flight back home.

Are Rwanda’s roads and transport good?

Rwanda has excellent road infrastructure. Volcanoes and Akagera are easily accessible by car, and there are options for helicopter or charter flights.

What else can I do in Rwanda besides trekking?

Explore Kigali’s museums and markets, relax at Lake Kivu, or go on a traditional village visit in the countryside.

When’s the best time for trekking or safari?

June–September and December–February are drier. Gorilla treks run year-round but are more comfortable in the dry season.

What’s the minimum age for gorilla trekking?

15 years old. However, other nature walks and cultural activities are suitable for younger children.

Do I need yellow fever or other vaccinations?

Yes. A yellow fever certificate is required for entry. Other recommended vaccines include typhoid and hepatitis A. Malaria precautions are also important.

Is Rwanda just for gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s crown jewel, but Akagera offers Big Five safaris, and Nyungwe Forest provides canopy walks and chimpanzee tracking.

How hard is the gorilla trek?

It ranges from easy to strenuous depending on group location. Guides assign groups based on fitness level. Porters and walking sticks are available and recommended.

How do I get a gorilla permit?

Permits cost $1,500 and should be booked early through a registered tour operator or the Rwanda Development Board.
